From time to time, we at Compassion like to honour people whose lives have made a difference to British Columbian society. Since we heard about his tragic death two weeks ago, our hearts and prayers have gone out to the family of Darshan Singh Sahsi. Below is an attempt to honour a man we never knew, but who changed our world for the better.

Darshan Singh Sahsi, 68, of Rajgarh village near Doraha in Ludhiana district, Punjab, India, immigrated to Canada in 1991 and passed away on October 27, 2025, at his home in Abbotsford, BC, Canada. A visionary entrepreneur, Darshan’s life was marked by determination, compassion, and a deep commitment to community.

As the founder and president of Canam International, he championed textile recycling and circular economy initiatives, transforming discarded clothing into valuable resources. The company became a global exporter of recycled textiles, diverting significant waste from landfills and promoting sustainable practices worldwide.

Darshan’s philanthropic efforts extended beyond borders, supporting charitable causes in both India and Canada—efforts that were not simply financial but deeply personal. A patron of Punjabi literature, Darshan was involved with the Punjab Sahitya Akademi, nurturing his cultural heritage and supporting emerging writers.

Darshan is survived by his beloved wife, Manjit Kaur Sahsi; his cherished sons, Arpan Sahsi and Navi Sahsi; and his extended family.
